Confession: I am a snacker.
While I love love love fruits and veggies, sometimes they just don’t satisfy my snack cravings the same way chips and crackers do. My kids are snackers too so I struggle with finding the balance between being healthy and satisfying our snack cravings. The problem is that most of the snack options on the market are high in sugar and sodium, so when I was asked to try Breton’s four new snack products made better with the goodness of beans, I jumped at the chance.
Breton’s two NEW gluten-free snack options have the same tender-crisp texture and wholesome taste of the original Breton crackers that my family has come to love and enjoy:
- Breton Bean crackers in White Bean with Salt & Pepper and Black Bean with Onion & Garlic
- and Breton Popped! Beans cracker chips in Sweet Chili Cheddar and Sea Salt & Pepper
Certified gluten-free by the Canadian Celiac Association, beans are the #1 in ingredient in all of these snacks!
I tried the Breton Popped! Beans cracker chips in Sweet Chili Cheddar first – they were so good that none of them made it into the picture above because I ate them ALL! Sweet Chili Cheddar is one of my favourite flavours so no one else in my family even had the opportunity to try them… Ooops!
Next we tried the Breton Bean crackers in White Bean with Salt & Pepper. These have a much more mild flavour, but were still good nevertheless. I like that the crackers have 3g fibre and 2g protein per serving. These have 90 calories per 20g serving (approximately 5 crackers). The kids gobbled these right up!
Next the hubby and I cuddled up and shared the Breton Popped! Beans cracker chips with Sea Salt & Pepper. We found this combo of chick peas and red beans very tasty. These cracker chips have 2g of fibre and 2g of protein per serving. They have only 90 calories per 20g serving (approximately 14 cracker chips). I found it really hard to stop eating these.
And finally we tried the Breton Bean crackers in Black Bean with Onion & Garlic. These also have 3g of fibre and 2g of protein per serving and are 100 calories per 20g serving (approximately 5 crackers). I loved the garlic flavour of them and could have eaten the whole box.
I found the Breton Bean crackers in Black Bean with Onion & Garlic so delicious that I decided to use them as a gluten-free substitute for bread crumbs in this delicious Italian Asparagus side dish that I made for dinner. I love making healthy substitutes when cooking!
- 2 tablespoons butter
- ½ teaspoon minced garlic
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- ½ cup crumbled Breton Black Bean with Onion & Garlic crackers
- ½ cup parmesan cheese
- 2 bags (300ml) frozen asparagus
- Salt, to taste
- In a frying pan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the minced garlic, Italian seasoning, cracker crumbs and parmesan cheese. Stir to coat and sauté over medium heat until the cracker crumbs start to brown, about 3-4 minutes.
- While the cracker crumbs are sautéeing, steam the asparagus, either in a Ziploc Zip 'n Steam bag (according to package directions) or in a pot of water (approximately 6 minutes).
- Add the asparagus to the frying pan and stir to coat.
- Season with salt, to taste, and serve hot.
