Mamavation Monday: Coping with Change

This is my Mamavation Monday post for September 6, 2011

Hey everyone!

Wow!  It’s back to school time already! Yes, for many of you, the kids went back to school a few weeks ago, but here in Southern Ontario (Canada), the traditional first day back is the first Tuesday in September (the day after Labour Day – and no I did NOT spell that wrong – we just spell some words differently here in Canada).  On Tuesday, my oldest daughter Sierra will be starting Grade 1, and slowly over the next two weeks my middle daughter will transition to four year old kindergarten.  Our routines are changing.

Back to school time….
Love it or hate it, we all have to deal with it at some point or another.  And lemme tell you, if it disrupts your routine, you’re not alone.

So how do I stay organized?
LOL – that’s a great question! I have three kids:

  • Oldest is in school 5 days a week
  • Middle is in school on Tuesdays and Thursdays and alternating Fridays – the other days she’ll be home with me until I go back to work. When I return to work she’ll then go to a daycare centre with her baby sister on Mondays and Wednesdays and alternating Fridays
  • Youngest (aka “the baby”) is home with me full-time until Halloween – then I’ll return to work and she’ll go to a daycare centre full time.
I plan and prepare ahead of time and use the organizer on my phone as much as possible. On Saturday nights I meal plan for the week, then hit the grocery store early Sunday morning (when it’s the quietest) and buy all the groceries we’ll need for the week’s meals and lunches. I prepare most of the lunches on Sunday night and put them in reuseable containers that I got from the dollar store.  There will be 5 lunches for my oldest, and 2-3 lunches for my middle daughter.   I set out school clothes for the kids every night then straighten the house and relax (aka draft blog posts).
I’m now full swing into half marathon training mode! My race is in 7 weeks – eek!  This means that I NEED to be in bed by 10pm so I can get up before the kids to get my run in.  I can no longer get up at 7:30, have a leisurely breakfast with the kids, then run with them, then stop at the park to play.  With the kids in school, I’ll run at 6am, then feed everyone a nutritious breakfast and get them out the door by 8:15 so we can walk to school.  Come November, I’ll have to leave earlier for work (7:15) and do the daycare drop off while hubby does the school drop off.
Basically – I plan ahead as much as I can.  When I don’t we fight and eat way too much fast food.
This past week…
The older girls were at camp – giving me a bit of a rehearsal for the craziness of school.  I did ok, and found some room for improvement in my planning.  That said, it didn’t stand in the way of my training:

August 29 - September 4

I ran four times and went to one BodyPump class.  I was also given a free Yoga pass to the local Yoga Studio.  I’m going to try it out tomorrow and see how it goes, though there is no way I can afford a membership and it really doesn’t fit in with my schedule as Sunday afternoons I’ll be playing “Fall Ball”  (a 5 week season of co-ed three-pitch softball).

Next week…
I’ll go to bed at TEN PM, get up at 5:45 (eeek!), and go for an 8k run on M/W/F and BodyPump T/TH.  Saturday will be my long run… 11k.  I’ll have to get up early Saturday too in order to get my run in because we’re joining two other families for a FUN cottage weekend full of swimming, jetskiiing, tubing, fishing and just hanging out.

Oh my goodness, I’m dizzy just trying to follow your schedule! Good luck with your race and with keeping up with the kidlets! You’re seriously such a bad@$$ mommy.

You’re right – I should expand on that… I use the Google Calendar on my phone & send an invite to my hubby’s work outlook calendar for any events/activities that he needs to know about. That way if he accepts the invitation, his Blackberry will beep to remind him.

I was wondering if besides the calendar on your phone you are using an app? I have tired cozy but it does not work for hubby…. so I have to rely on paper calendar to communicate with him…

Thank you for your post! My son starts K on Wednesday and I am at a loss as to what to do. Our schedule is going to change and I am probably going to be running in circles for a week or two!

Good luck on your run! And I hope you have fun at your yoga class. :)

You have a great routine down.
Good thing about Kinder here is that they offer food there.
My only downside with our routine is that when one of my kiddos becomes sick.

I know whatcha mean about the schedule changes. For us every 9 weeks we change since we are in year round school. But we are still striving to find the best schedule and organization for our family

I tip my hat to you! You have a great schedule down pat and have a great way of carving out time for yourself. That is something I’m slowly learning how to do. Best of luck to you this week!
