Happy Monday everyone!
I hope you all had a great weekend, and for all of you who raced, I hope you had great races! This week I’m linking up with Erin for Weekend Snapshots.>
My weekend was busy (but really, when is it ever NOT busy?). Friday night Amber had skating lessons and while she was skating my older two went to the pleasure skating on one of the other ice surfaces. (The arena near our house has 5 rinks). After that we went home and had dinner in the living room (a rare treat) while watching our beloved Blue Jays play against the Kansas City Royals. Unfortunately the Jays lost a tough game.
On Saturday Brooke had a 90 minute hockey practice first from 7-8:30 am, then Sierra had a 90 minute practice right afterwards. I drove Sierra to the arena for 8 am, then hung around for a bit (unitl 9:30) socialising with the parents I know. I then took Brooke and Amber home to do a quick tidy of the house and start the laundry. At 10:30 Hubby arrived home with Sierra, then he was right back out of the house to take Amber to a nearby town for her hockey 11:30-12:30. While hubby was out with Amber, Sierra, Brooke and I went Halloween costume shopping with our friends that the girls will be Trick or Treating with. The kids decided on being characters from Super Mario Brothers: Sierra will be Luigi, Brooke will be Bowser, and our friends will be Mario and Yoshi. I also picked up a costume for hubby and myself for the adult Halloween Party later this month. Afterwards the girls played with their friends in their costumes for awhile while I hung out with Juliette. Eventually we had to go home so I could feed the girls lunch. After lunch I ran around the house tidying up and doing more laundry. When Amber got home from her hockey I took her to the Halloween store to get her a costume. She decided to be Toad from Super Mario Brothers so that she could join in the group costume with her sisters and friends. After the costume shopping I dropped her off at home, then headed to the grocery store to pick up some last minute food for my pre-race pasta dinner. I had invited my mom, my friends Laura and Juliette and her kids to join us for dinner. While I was at the grocery store I ran into my friend Julie so I invited her to dinner too. At 4:30 everyone arrived at my place to watch the Blue Jays play the Kansas City Royals and to have a nice pre-race pasta dinner of spaghetti and meat sauce (although I was the only one running on Sunday morning).
I have no idea how to make spaghetti look good in pictures, so trust me, despite the appearance this was delicious!
Kids in their costumes
Unfortunately the Blue Jays blew their lead in the 7th inning and never caught back up. Boo! After the game everyone went home, and my mom took my two youngest daughters to her house for a sleepover because Sierra’s hockey game was at 7:15 am the next morning ad I had my half marathon. After everyone left Sierra helped me to sort all of the laundry and I carefully picked out my clothes for the race.
Flat Janice – ready to race!
Sunday morning my alarm woke me up at 5:30 am. I got up and dressed then made myself a breakfast of Burnbrae Farms scrambled eggs, and some toast. At 6:05 am I left to pick up a coffee, my Boston Cream donut and to fill the tank of my van with gas for the drive to the race. As I was leaving hubby and Sierra were stumbling out of bed to go to Sierra’s hockey game, so I kissed them goodbye and wished them luck in the hockey games (Hubby was coaching Brooke’s game at 12:15). Because I had left so early there was no traffic and I was able to get a good parking spot right by the start/finish line and baggage check. I had almost two hours to kill until the race start!

I’ll save all the race details for my recap post coming later this week. I had a good race with a surprising finish… Stay tuned! After the race I fought all of the traffic home and arrived back around 1:30 pm. I then took a shower, relaxed and stretched, then played Guess Who and other games with the girls until it was time to go to Julie’s house for an engagement dinner to congratulate my friend Christine on getting engaged a week ago. Congrats Christine!
Our dinner prepared by Julie was amazing!
Fitness wise, last week was pretty good. Monday and Tuesday I took off as rest days, Wednesday I did BodyPump at GoodLife Fitness, Thursday I ran 8k with speedy Becky, then Friday I set out to run 5k with Juliette and Becky, but only ran 3k and walked 2k home because I was just physically and mentally exhausted from life/work/parenting etc. Saturday I “rested” (although you can see from my busy Saturday that a rest day is not all that restful), then Sunday I ran the half marathon. This week my fitness plan is to recover!
My recovery plan:
Monday: 30 min walk at lunch
Tuesday: DailyBurn Yoga at home
Wednesday: DailyBurn Yoga at home
Thursday: 8k run with Juliette and Becky
Friday: Lunch strength workout at GoodLife Fitness (maybe CX Works?) + 5k run while the girls skate
Sunday: 60 minute cycle + Strength circuit at home
This week instead of a strength move, I’m sharing with you a combo strength/stretch that’s great for runners. With so many of us doing fall races it’s important for us to stay strong and to maintain our range of motion.
DOWNWARD FACING DOG
One of my favorite benefits of downward facing dog is the stretch in the back of your body, mainly in the hamstrings and the calves (posterior chain). Even if you’re very stiff and tight, you can keep your knees bent and you will still feel the stretch in your hamstrings and calves. With this move you’ll also gain strength in your legs while you lengthen them. Engage your quadriceps actively to open the hamstrings. Imagine your heels lengthening to the floor as you lift your hips towards the ceiling. This move also strengthens your arms and shoulders and engages your core.
Have a great week everyone, what’s on your fitness plan for this week?
Did you race this weekend? How did you do?
