What a great post! I love yoga but I had never thought of doing "active rest days" what a great idea! Then I wouldn't feel like I did absolutely nothing on my not big activity days. Thanks for the idea. I do not take a yoga "class" but I have done yoga on wii fit plus, and a yoga dvd that came with my floor mat. :-) and I used to do yourself fitness which has yoga. would like to do it again sometime soon. yoga does help un-stress me. :)

Never tried Yoga before but everyone I know speak highly of its benefits. I believe it indirectly helps decrease the level of cortisol our body produces (by reducing our stress level); and hence, keeps the free racidals in check. Free radicals are responsible for cell destruction, which leads to cancer, and aging (to name only a couple). I just came up with this hypothesis after reading your post, Janice, but it does make perfect sense, doesn't it ;-)

Cheers

Yes! Yes! I completely adore yoga. I started it when I was coping with a running injury and have found it to be indispensable, for most of the reasons you listed. Here's a post I wrote about it too! http://www.waytenmom.blogspot.com/2011/09/do-stretching-and-yoga-help-runners-its.html

Have you ever tried Bikram yoga? Some people know it as heat yoga - the room is set to about 105 - 110 degrees and it's a 90 minute session. It's unbelievable at getting you loose; just make sure to drink a ton of water during/after so you won't get dehydrated. For a runner, the only caveat would be to not do it before running (it wipes you out) and don't go too deep with the poses or you could strain a muscle.

Have a great time with the yoga. If you really get into it you may want to connect with Sage Rountree in some capacity via twitter, attending one of her workshops or via one of her books. She specializes in yoga for athletes and endurance sports coaching. She is also who runner who did a pretty decent NY marathon recently.
