plateau 160x120 Motivation Monday February 8, 2010

Hitting a plateau...

I know, I know – I’m the “Fitness Cheerleader” so motivation shouldn’t be an issue.  Unfortunately even I battle the workout blahs and this week was tough.  After my great 10K run on Sunday, I went out for an easy 6K run on Monday – or so I thought… 1K into my run my calf cramped and the contraction was so strong it caused a minor muscle tear of my soleus muscle.  I went to my yoga class on Tuesday, then ran through the pain on Wednesday.  Thursday and Friday I rested my leg and on Saturday I managed to run 10K with less pain.  Through all of that I felt bummed out and I was PMS’ing and turned back to my old self – eating healthy meals yet sabotaging myself with snacking on crap betweeen meals telling myself – it’s ok, there’s always my next meal to eat better.

Despite everything, this week I lost .4lbs.  It’s still a lost but when you look at my recent weightloss history you can see that I’m hitting a plateau:

(btw-here’s instructions on how you can create one of these charts for yourself)

My weightloss curve is flattening out.  I need to step things up a notch – get back to my healthy eating and add some intensity to my workouts.  I need to start running a bit faster and longer on my weekday runs and I need to do something different to burn more calories and bring back my enthusiasm.  What could that be?  Hmmmm… Weights?  Interval training? Maybe swimming?

Yep – that’s what I’m going to do next week, some good ol’ swimming. Heather at Run Faster Mommy added swimming to her routine last week and kick started her weightloss – she lost 5 lbs in a week!   On Tuesday and Thursday morning I’m going to get up early and swim some laps before work.  (Can you guys all remind me to go to bed early Monday and Wednesday nights?).   It shall be interesting to see if this kicks my enthusiasm and motivation back into gear!

How are you doing?  Have you had a good or bad week?

Fitness Tip of The Day: Exercise at home. You’ll be more inclined to follow-through on your exercise commitment if you don’t have to drive somewhere to do your workout. Plus, you won’t waste any time on driving, parking, the locker room or waiting to use equipment. Working out at home requires very little equipment (even can be equipment-free) and is quite inexpensive.

I hate that you are struggling these past couple weeks. However, I know you are only human and there will be trials to overcome. Good thing is you are figuring it out and getting ready to try other things with what you already have. Wow, you ran a 10k?! Amazing! Get a moving, you can do it!!

    Janice,

What a great post! Swimming is a great cross training activity that I think is overlooked a lot. As a runner, I am no stranger to the pool :) You have a great site going on here and would love to keep in touch.

    All the best,

I wish that this journey was easy. . . unfortunately it is not. It is hard to struggle through days as a mom, wife, etc. and then to add healthy eating and exercise some days it makes us crazy.

I wish I had an opportunity to add swimming into my workout routine. I think that I would love it and it would be easier on my knees. Good luck with this addition to your workouts.

    Have a great week!

That darn eating….I did the same thing this weekend and it made me mad, but did it anyways.

Swimming sounds like a great way to add something different to your routine! Have fun!

The swimming will also be great for your calf. I hope your calf is healing swiftly despite all the running. Have a great week Janice and don’t get down on yourself if you hit a temporary plateau.

Careful as you kick it up a notch. You don’t want to further injure your calf. These things take time to heal. Good luck.
I always enjoy reading your posts. Thanks for the info on posting a graph!

I saw your tweet this morning about swimming – good for you! Isn’t it great that we have not only a support system (even for the cheerleaders!) and brain-storming group? So glad that we’re all in this together!!

I would add weights. It’s a great way to get past a plateau, bumping up your metabolism for quite a while after you’re done! Plus,. muscle burns fat, I know you know that! Keep up the good work!

Running and swimming, wow! You are really my cardio champ! Take it easy on that muscle tear, though. You might want to add a little of strength training on your routine if you’re still looking for something more to do. Take care! — @ImAHotMom

I think it’s good that you admit you struggle cause I struggle too. You really can’t be perfect and a leader at the same time. If you try, it’s unfair to your members. They aren’t going to be perfect and will look up to you and will never be able to attain that. I applaud you. XXOO

I’m glad to read that I’m not the only one who struggles and that we are all just real people. hope you have a wonderful week
