Why Summer Camp is Awesome (+ Enter to Win a Camp Session and a Trip to Punta Cana)

Before I tell you why I feel that summer camp is an awesome experience for kids, I want to share with you a great Share & Win contest for a camp session at Pioneer Camp and a trip to PUNTA CANA!

Contest open until June 15, 2012

Did you go enter the contest?  Good – now here’s my story:

When I was 9 or 10 years old I went to a two-week summer OVERNIGHT camp. By.my.self.  I was a shy kid, but while I was there I gained a TON of confidence and broke out of my shell.  I’ll admit I was scared… at first. But there were so many fun things to do like archery, canoeing, swimming, sailing, soccer, crafts, etc that getting comfortable wasn’t too hard to do.  The camp I went to also had swimming lessons.. in a lake!  I had so much fun that I asked to go every summer for 3-4 summers in a row.  All those hours spent at swimming lessons in a lake gave me the open water swimming skills I needed when I competed in triathlons (before I had kids).  Oh – it was also a Christian Camp so I also learned a lot of values from the religious teachings, an appreciation for Jesus, and for everything on this great earth that the Lord has made for us.

What I’m trying to say is that summer camp is awesome!!

It’s one of those experiences in life that I absolutely INSIST that my girls have.

It’s FUN, they’ll develop great friendships, and they’ll learn things that I could never teach them – like how to make “gimp” friendship bracelets in a variety of styles: flat, zipper, circle and square that they can give out to their friends, water safety skills, and a whole pile of fun camp songs (you know the ones I’m talking about).

I’m actually really excited about them being old enough to go to overnight camp (together) next summer.  This year Brooke is too young, and well, she’d drive me bonkers of Sierra went without her, so we’re waiting one more year.

Question:
Have you ever gone to overnight camp?
Did you enjoy it?
Would you consider sending your kids to overnight camp?

I did go to camp as a kid… a few different ones actually. I went to a huge church camp once that I didn’t like at all cause they split up friends into different cabins and I found it initimidating to be with so many older kids.

I also did Brownie camps which I loved, and Pioneer Girls too. I think I liked them cause they were smaller groups and all girls and I knew them.

I freakin’ loved camp! Went twice a year, spring and winter. Always had a blast. Gotta love the boys snorting green jello up their nose. What a way to impress the girls. But my fave was rock climbing, making lanyards, canoeing, star gazing… oh I had lots of faves.

But can you believe I just did not like blueberry pancakes then? Sigh, I was clearly missing out.

I LOVED going to camp as a kid. I was fortunate to attend summer camp in Waterton Natl Park in the AB Rockies. Being out in nature everyday is what sparked my love for the mountains, and during the summer, I try to be out there as much as possible.
