What do Personal Trainers and Dental Hygienists Have in Common?

This is a totally random thought that I had Wednesday night while I was at the dentist having my teeth cleaned by my hygienist.  (It was the most relaxing evening of this week might I add)….

 What do Personal Trainers and Dental Hygienists Have in Common?

Well – ok, so personal trainers and hygienists don’t really have anything in common right now… But suppose they did? (Hear me out on this).  Suppose you had to visit your Personal Trainer every 3-6 months for a fitness test or a really freaking HARD workout?  Yanno, similar to when you visit your hygienist for a REALLY good cleaning and they put your teeth to the test.

Do you ever feel that your hygienist is TESTING how well and how often you brush?  I certainly do.  Do you feel like super guilty that you didn’t do a better job? Does your mind flash back to that morning when you were too busy rushing the kids outta the house to brush?  Then, for the next several weeks after your dental visit do you brush super religiously?  (C’mon – tell me I’m not the only one).

What if you were tested every few months on your fitness progress? What if working out and exercising was as  important as brushing your teeth?  What if you HAD to visit a Personal Trainer ever 3-6 months and be put through a kick butt workout?

That would certainly motivate me to do a better job of meeting the minimum requirements to keep my heart healthy (30 min of daily moderate exercise).

    Janice!
    When I saw the title of your post, I said to myself where’s this going? lol But I also know you never disappoint, so I decided to take a chance and read along; and BOYYY did you hit the nail right on the head!

    Basically, the human being needs to be constantly motivated in order to do “stuff”, even if it’s for our benefit. What’s the motivation to clean our teeth? well let’s see: when people start looking the other way while you’re trying to whisper something in their face, that’s probably a wake up call aka motivation.

    To exercise, eat healthy, and stay fit, we normally do not need a watchdog; AT MOST, all we need is for others to tell us we are slacking; but guess what? We don’t take that too well do we? We say stuff like “I can’t believe you think I’m fat” or “mind your business”.

    But go over to Japan for instance and let’s observe the cultural difference there. Japanese people tell one another ALL the time if they are letting go of themselves. What does that do? It motivates the majority of them to eat right and exercise as much as possible. Moreover (and this one is a bit extreme I have to admit but no less effective) most of their clothing stores do NOT carry sizes larger than a LL (which is the same as Tight Large here in the US). If you “blow up”, you might be out of sweet luck!! Tough Love!

    If someone tells us that we need to exercise regularly, it’s probably for health reasons (other than the aesthetic of course). Come on folks, let’s learn to fight the right fight and plead defeat when we know we are in the wrong.

    Love this!! I would try way harder (and be much more committed after the appointment) if fitness testing happened as often as dentist appointments. And I ALWAYS feel guilty when I leave the dentist (and I even have good habits!) and then brush like a madman for the next few weeks while the dentist’s warning is fresh in my mind ;)

    I think you hit it in one, Janice, because for me as well, if I was due to go for a fitness check-up on a regular basis I would be much more inclined to put the work in.

    What a forward thought you had there…
    .. but on the other hand, I wonder how many clients would sack their strict personal trainer for an “easier” one so they didn`t get to be made to feel as guilty.
