You may remember that a month ago I took the girls back-to-school shoe shopping at Sport Chek. Well I have a confession about that… they aren’t the only ones who got shoes on that trip. While we were there I picked out a new pair of shoes for myself, actually two pairs. I picked out a pair of Women’s Reebok Crossfit Nano 5.0’s and a pair of Women’s Asics Gel Cumulus 17’s. As you know, my availability to race is dwindling quickly because of the girls sports, and so is my ability to get out of the house and run. I want to get more into strength training, and crossfit style workouts of the day, so I picked the Reebok Crossfit Nano’s for that purpose. The Asics Gel Cumulus shoes are for the mornings when I can get out and run, running is still my first love even if I can’t race as often as I want to.
In order to properly review the Reebok Crossfit Nano’s I decided to try out a real crossfit workout at a real crossfit box. I contacted the Milton Reebok Crossfit FirePower to find out if I could just drop in any time or if they had specific times reserved for beginners like me. I have to admit crossfit has always intrigued me, but intimidated me at the same time. I didn’t want to be the ONLY newbie there. Thankfully Thursday nights they offer free trials so I wasn’t going to be the only newbie. For added security I brought my best running friend Juliette. Her daughter goes to Crossfit Kids on Thursday nights, but Juliette had never tried crossfit either.

When we first arrived we were greeted and made to feel welcome. Our class was a mixture of complete newbies (like us) and some very experienced crossfitters. Given my love for my kettlebell, I immediately got excited about the number of kettlebells they had… No sharing or waiting for others to be done!

We gathered around the whiteboard where we were introduced to our workout of the day (WOD).
What on earth does that say?!?
George, our instructor, explained what all the acronyms meant (thank goodness!). I’ve always felt that crossfit is like a whole other language! (Another reason crossfit intimidated me). Our warm up was: EMOM 8, which means Every Minute On The Minute for 8 minutes. On the odd minutes we did 10 KBS (kettlebell swings) and 10 squats. The faster we did them, the more time we had to “rest” before the 8 burpees we did on the even minutes. If we did the 8 burpees fast, we could then rest until we did our next round of 10 kettlebell swings and 10 squats. I was ready to quit after our “warmup”, thank goodness Juliette was with me to make sure I stayed!

The burpees quickly taught me why my new Crossfit Nano’s had such good treads on them – when I got tired my form definitely got sloppy and slipping would be a concern if it weren’t for the treads.
Next we moved on to our “Conditioning”. Again, the workout looked like hieroglyphics to me, but once George translated it, and spent a good 10 minutes helping us with our techniques I understood it a lot better. We had 3 minutes to row 200 meters (thought that sign CLEARLY says RUN which Juliette and I would have preferred to do instead of rowing because we have ZERO arm strength), then do 15 wallballs (pick up a medicine ball that weighs 10 pounds and fling it straight up in the air as high as you can from a squat, catch it, then fling it again), then with whatever time is remaining in the 3 minutes do as many burpee, then jump onto a box as many times as you can. Once the 3 minutes were over, we got to rest for a minute, then repeat the rowing, wallball, burpee box jump round again for a total of 5 rounds.
My Crossfit Nano’s again proved their worth to me. A running shoe would have been too bulky for the box jumps, though I must admit that after the first round I figured out that I could get in more step ups than box jumps.
After 4 rounds George said the newbies could stop – we were seriously DYING!

Unfortunately Juliette never gives up, which meant that neither could I, so we stayed with the more advanced crossfitters and did the last round. Afterwards the two of us were EXHAUSTED!!!
(And yes, we wore the same tank tops – that’s what happens when you hang out together so much, you ended buying the same clothes)
All told, I had a blast! It was HARD, but fun at the same time. I enjoyed the challenge, tha camaraderie, and loved that it wasn’t easy. I learned that running slow and steady 3-4 times/week is NOT nearly the same thing as a good crossfit workout. I would love love love to be a crossfit member and really become much more involved in that community if there was a way to balance it with my running (and the girls hockey). Unfortunately both Juliette and I were much too sore the next morning for our run, though by that night I was able to do a super easy 4k run. For now, my Crossfit Nano’s will have to do burpees, kettlebell swings and squats with me at home.
