Whether you’re someone who’s just getting started on a health and fitness program or you’ve been at it for a few years now and are just looking to take your progress a step higher, working with a personal trainer might be something that you’ve thought about.
While there will always be a cost to using a personal trainer, when do the benefits it provides out weigh the cost?
For many people, the best way they will see results is by working with a personal trainer, so by determining if you happen to be one of those people, you can feel confident about your decision of whether or not to invest in one. Let’s have a look at the main factors to consider when deciding whether you should work with a trainer:
- Your Motivational Level
Perhaps the single biggest reason why many people do turn to working with a personal trainer is to help them maintain their motivational levels. If you’re someone who just can’t seem to find it within yourself to get to the gym on a regular basis but yet when you know you’re paying a personal trainer to work with you it’s not a problem, then making the decision to hire one is likely a good move. Since you really only will see benefits from your workout when you actually do it, it’s a must that you’re getting there regularly. Personal trainers do serve as very good motivational tool, so from this perspective they could very well make or break your progress. - Your Knowledge Of Exercise Strategies
Second, you should also look at how much you know about various exercise strategies. If you’re someone who has never stepped foot in a gym before, getting a personal trainer for a couple sessions to at least show you proper form will be a must. It’s vital that you learn how to execute the exercises correctly or else there’s a good chance you won’t target the muscles like you were hoping you would and even worse yet, you could wind up injured. If you’re someone who has been working out for a while and has a good handle on form, you may also find that you’ve come to a point in your program where you’ve progressed as far as you think you will and at this point you need some type of advanced workout strategy to take it up a notch. When that’s the case, again, a personal trainer will be the best place to turn. They’ll be able to show you those advanced techniques that you can use immediately to get right back on track. - Your Previous Efforts
Also take a look at the previous attempts you’ve had with your workout programs. If you have tried to go on a workout before, but have not had much success on your own, then you are likely a very good candidate for working with a personal trainer. Since our previous behaviours do tend to be very good benchmarks for future behaviour, unless you want your results to repeat themselves once again, you have to do something different. The personal trainer is the difference that could get you started on the right foot this time around and bring you to the results that you were missing the first time. If you have had good results in the past but just fell off the program for other reasons due to a busy lifestyle or injury, then you may very well be fine going about the program your own again as well so consider the alternate scenario. - Your Social Workout Preference
Finally, think about how much of a social element you want with your workout sessions. Some people actually do prefer doing their workouts on their own as for them it’s a chance to clear their heads. Others, however, prefer to be in the company of someone as they feel bored when doing a work all by themselves. A workout buddy would be another way to solve this issue, but some may prefer going the trainer route instead. Identify what suits you best and then take action to fulfill that.
So there you have the main things that you should keep in mind when deciding whether you want to work with a trainer or not. You should always remember that you can sign up session by session as well, so nothing says you can’t try it a few times and see if it helps you out. Having a trainer who you trust, and get along with, can be one of the most beneficial ways to boost your progress.

I conduct educational classes to certify personal trainers. Here is an insider secret to picking a good trainer. Ask them who they are certified by – you only want to hear the person tell you want the letters in the organization name mean. For example, I am certified by the NSCA – that stands for National Strength and Conditioning Association. That’s what you want to hear.
Anyone who cant tell you in 1 second the answer to this question is probalby not a quality trainer.

This is a great post-and very timely for me.
I just hired a personal trainer for 3 sessions for exactly the reasons you identified in your post. Now, I have a great fitness program that is repeatable…one that I can follow on my own. I will gladly pay for another few sessions in the coming week/months as I will need a tweak or two to stay motivated and keep my muscles guessing.
Thanks!

@Kris: Having a trainer is always a good thing, you never know you can push through the limit until someone actually told you that you can do it, & most of all, it’s fun!

No problem! Thanks for submitting it! I’ve corrected the formatting – for some reason it didn’t post right from my iPhone.
Thanks again and have a very Merry Christmas!
Great post – I LOVE my trainer – and now that I think about it, I passed your test, so I should work with one! I love being accountable to show up, I love having someone who pushes me harder than I would on my own, and I love learning. I’ve had trainers before (blah), but Sonjia is amazing. She has opened my world to compound, functional, HIIT training that is fun, dynamic, and effective.
Great post – thanks for sharing!
