I’m now going into the final 3 weeks of marathon training – that point where all the hard work is done and my main jobs are to maintain my endurance, and not get injured or sick. It’s time for my body to heal from the training and do whatever physiological things it does. It’s….
THE FINAL COUNTDOWN!!
HA! I couldn’t resist putting that image in this post ’cause the song by Europe has been stuck in my head for the past week, so hopefully now it’s stuck in yours too – you can thank me later.
This week’s training started off great, then fizzled out as my body started to feel beat up and my throat started to get an odd tickle on Thursday night…
Planned: Strength with coach – I never know what to expect.
Actual: 2 sets of 50 reps of: Squats, deadlifts, facepulls and some other exercise (box jumps?). It was so painful that my brain has blocked it out. EDIT: My workout log says the last exercise was kettlebell swings.
Planned: 8k before work
Actual: 8k on my lunch break – I was really sore from the 100 reps on Monday and likely still recovering from Saturday’s long run so I took it really slow and easy.
Planned: Strength with coach
Actual: Mike surprised me and let me choose 4 exercises. I wasn’t sure what our game plan was so I choose two upper body exercises: chest press and bent over rows (push/pull exercises to help the arm motion in running), box squats, and box jumps. The joke was on me when I found out how many reps I was to do of the circuit: 10, 20, 30, 40, 30 reps. I was also supposed to do 20 and 10, but ran out of time because I spent so much time whining about how tired and sore I was. 130 reps of these exercises is NO JOKE, I was so sore afterwards!
Planned: 10k tempo run
Actual: 8k tempo run – I skipped the warmup 2k and just ran hard. My mile splits were: 8:53, 8:49, 9:00, 8:35, 8:30.
Actual: Rest – My body was exhausted from the past two weeks of training so I decided to listen to it and gave myself a rest day. My throat had also started to get this weird nagging tickle to it. You know, the kind that says you’re about to come down with a killer cold.
Actual: 24k – Last long run done! I slept in and missed my opportunity to run 15k before meeting my best running friend Juliette to run another 15 k. I ran 9k before meeting her, then ran 15k with her. I was dying at the end.
Actual: REST! I went and watched my middle daughter’s hockey. She was fantastic!! Later that day I mowed the lawn and sat around my neighbour’s backyard watching the kids swim – I can’t believe it was warm enough at the end of September in Canada to swim outside!!
The weather this week was absolutely GORGEOUS!!!
Overall I’m happy with how my training went. Next week will be pretty much the same only on Saturday I will run 20k in the afternoon after the kids hockey. I can’t believe that I’m excited about “just” having to run 20k – a few months ago that was a REALLY long run, and now it’s almost like a warmup!
Which brings me to this week’s plans:
Monday: Hot dogs and veggie sticks (Hubby made a gazillion hot dogs for dinner tonight and everyone opted for his burgers instead, so we’re all stuck eating the leftover hot dogs)
Tuesday: My Homemade beef burritos
Wednesday: Chicken breasts, asparagus and baked potatoes
Thursday: Spaghetti and meatballs
Monday: Strength train with my coach
Tuesday: 8k run before work
Wednesday: Strength train with my coach
Thursday: 10k run before work – 2k warm up, 6k tempo, 2k cool down
Friday: Bodypump class
Sunday: Rest/watch the girls play hockey
After this coming week there will only be 2 short weeks until the marathon – can you believe it?!?
