If you’re new here, #MotivateME Monday is a weekly link-up co-hosted by myself and Running Rachel for accountability and encouragement. It’s a place for us to share goals, plans, successes and have each other to pick us up to keep moving forward.
Happy Monday everyone! I hope that you all are doing well and that you had a great week of exercise and training. Last week was a crazy busy week in my household so I really don’t know where to begin with my recap.
Last Monday I skipped my swim and just did a kettlebell workout from DailyBurn in the evening. On Tuesday morning I did 3 x 1 mile repeats with ½ mile recovery jogs with my running friends before work. Each of my repeats are now averaging about 8 min/mile, sometimes even dipping below that – this speed stuff is really helping! Then Tuesday at lunch I went to spinning class.
I tried to get up to swim on Wednesday, but unfortunately when I arrived at the pool I found out that the pool was closed. Bummer – I hate when that happens.
Last week I also booked a dumpster and took Wednesday to Friday off of work to sort, purge and recycle all of our old “stuff” (aka crap). We had old broken furniture, old sports equipment, baby furniture, toddler toys, strollers, old electronics etc coming out of our ying yangs. I spent three days sorting our closets, drawers, the garage and basement to get rid of the crap. Every morning I woke up feeling like I had been hit by a truck from it – all of that bending and lifting was hard work!!
On Thursday, while on our morning run (10k), my best running friend surprised me and told me she had booked me in for a massage at Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa on Thursday morning knowing that I would need it from all the work I was doing. So awesome! Keep an eye out for my recap of that coming on Wednesday.
On Saturday morning I made a last-minute decision to take my two youngest daughters to the 5 Peaks Trail Race at Terra Cotta Conservation Area while my oldest daughter was with hubby at her rep softball tryouts. I had won race entry from Carmy of Run Carmy Run and had been indecisive about when I would use it. My friend Chuck had mentioned he was doing the race with his kids so I decided to use my race entry for this one. 5 Peaks does a race series of 5 trail races throughout the year – all of the races are within a short drive of my house. My mom joined us to be an extra set of eyes and hands so that I could also do the Sport 5.4k race. I “raced” the 3k with my middle daughter Brooke, the 600m with my youngest daughter Amber, and the 5.4k trail run with my friend Chuck. It was so much fun to introduce everyone to trail running, and Chuck’s daughter even placed 3rd in her age category!! I’ll have our race recap up on Friday as I still have to contact the photographer from the race to purchase the pictures from her.
After the run on Saturday, my neighbour Chris came over to help me rip out the overgrown shrubs from my “garden”. I have wanted to replace everything for a few years but have been either pregnant, breast-feeding, or chasing a toddler so I haven’t been able to really tackle it the way I wanted to. Chris and I cut out all the branches from the shrubs, then he dug up the root bulbs, then we bundled up all the debris. It took us over two hours! Our house is over 40 years old and I think a lot of the landscaping was done back then and has been neglected ever since. In three weeks from now Chris is going to help me choose what to plant and show me where to plant things. It feels amazing to finally get a handle on it!
Although I was exhausted from the week, I still went out Sunday afternoon for a long run with my running friends. We ran 15.5k together, but my legs were dead! I lead them through a 1.5-2k trail nearby and ran the rest on the roads. I love trail running and I need to learn my way around more trails at Rattlesnake Park and Kelso. I’m always afraid of getting lost in the woods because I really don’t have much of a sense of direction…
This week’s “taper” plan is:
Monday: Kettlebell workout after work
Tuesday: Speed work before work (3 x 1 mile repeats with ½ mile recovery jogs), then spinning at lunch
Wednesday: Swimming before work, then kettlebell workout after work
Thursday: 10k easy run before work, then spinning at lunch
Saturday: Easy ride on my bike?!?
Sunday: Mississauga Half Marathon!!
My Ironman 70.3 training is going fairly well but I need to make a bigger effort to drag my butt to a pool. I hate swimming!!
