Hey guys! Remember back in February in one of my last posts about my Boston Training I was talking about how I was struggling with my motivation and how I was contemplating doing the Chilly Half marathon and also hiring a coach/trainer? Then the March Healthy Living Blogging Challenge came along, and my laptop died (or is temporarily sick) so I haven’t really updated you on any of those things.
So here’s my March training recap….
I hired the trainer. It’s costing A LOT of money but it is so worth it! My motivation and running mojo are back! My training sessions with the trainer on Tuesdays and Thursdays are crazy hard! We’re working on strengthening my stabilizer muscles, core, upper back and teaching my glute med muscles to engage when I run. Basically were working on strengthening every thing that will help me run with proper form for a longer period of time. I’m good for 5-8 k, then it all falls apart because my hamstrings are doing all the work when my glutes should be helping. Over the past two weeks I’ve really seen a difference in my endurance and speed. And my hamstrings are not screaming at my after a run!! Sometimes my workouts are really tough and don’t seem sport specific (though they are) – those ones I hate. The other workouts involve a bit of running, like windsprints, and using cables to mimic running motion while pushing and pulling to strengthen my upper body – those workouts are tough AND fun. I apparently like running, and anything running related – the rest, like the day we did a tabata squat, lunge & jumping workout I despise (and feel like a weak a$$ little girly girl afterwards because I whined so much during the training). Thankfully my trainer doesn’t hate me, yet…. I’m not normally a whiner when I workout, but his workouts are HARD! And I’m so sore for days after wards. It’s awesome!
Because I don’t want to waste the $ and time I’m investing in the strength training, I’m making sure that I do all of my runs. It meant that last month I ran in some brutally cold and awful conditions, and also had to go to the gym to use the dreadmill after the kids went to bed to make up runs that I had missed earlier in the day due to work commitments. My friend Juliette has been awesome on the weekends and has run with me the past 3 Saturday’s straight! I hate leaving my family to run on the weekends, so it’s great to have the obligation of running with a friend. She’s always ready early too – standing at my door making sure I actually get out. There is no way I would have gotten my longish runs in without her – Thanks Juliette!
According to Nike + I ran a total of… 161.19km last month! That’s the most I’ve run in a single month since before kids!!
I’m also working on my eating…. I’ve pretty much stopped eating Frosted Flakes and Fruit Loops for breakfast, and I’m no longer having a pre-run muffin snack. Instead I’m having protein smoothies for breakfast, and a pre-run apple. Who am I?!? I also started using MyFitnessPal to track my nutrients – the ratios of carbs, fat & protein I’m consuming, and making sure I get enough iron, potassium, calcium, vitamins etc.
I am also being a bit more careful with my calories – opting for nutrient rich foods with lower calories than I used to (ok – I’m being A LOT better with my food). It’s really making a difference! I feel so much happier, and energetic! The few pounds that I’ve lost has also been a welcome bonus 😀
This week’s training plan:
Monday: 9.5k run (done)
Tuesday: Workout with my trainer – Tuesday’s are usually a lower body/core day
Wednesday: 8.5k run
Thursday: Workout with my trainer – Thursday’s are usually an upper body/core day
Friday: 8.5k run
Saturday: 16k run
Oh! And I almost forgot… I ran the Chilly Half Marathon at the start of the month too (March 2nd). I finished in 2:03:49. Not a PB, but with the limited training I did in January and February I wasn’t expecting one either. I’ll have to do a recap post about it later this week.
All in all this past month was great! I’m sorry I wasn’t blogging about it – I was so exhausted every night from my training that my none of my posts would have made any sense anyways. That said, I need to get caught up. I have some great giveaways coming up for you (I’m so behind on those) and some pretty neat product reviews coming up too, so stay tuned!
Have a great week everyone!
Now it’s your turn… How was your March?
Are you happy that the warmer weather is starting to appear?
