I see lots of posts around the internet about people choosing ONE WORD to define how they will live their lives in 2014 or to motivate themselves toward their goals. My friend Stephanie has chosen the word simplicity, and my friend Rachel has written about the word uncomfortable.
I haven’t chosen a word, nor do I intend to. (Though if I did perhaps the word BOSTON would be fitting?) Instead, I like to choose a theme song. Last year my song was “Inner Ninja” by Classified. When I run, I usually wear all black, making me feel like a ninja:
Yes, I am Ninja.
This year, I am still a Ninja but I have a different focus: A full marathon. The last time I attempted to run this distance I fell apart. I don’t think I ever told you this, but I quit. I simply gave up 19 miles in and called my then fiancée (now my husband) to come get me. It was a cold, rainy miserable day at the end of October, the race was the Casino Niagara International Marathon and my hubby had proposed the night before under a tree along the Niagara Parkway with the illuminated falls as a beautiful backdrop. I just couldn’t find it in myself to walk/run the last 6.2 miles of the race (hubby finally picked me up at mile 20 after trying to convince me over my cell phone to keep going: “What?!? You’re quitting after running 19 miles? You ONLY have 7 left to go, you can do it! Why don’t you walk a mile and let me know at mile 20 if you can do it, I ‘ll meet you there.”). Now I could bore you with all of the details and excuses that led me to give up but that isn’t the point of this post but the real point is that despite the fact that I had successfully completed two full marathons before the Casino Niagara Marathon attempt, I ‘m absolutely petrified to attempt that distance again. Even though 10 years have gone by, the absolute pain and despair that I felt in quitting that day is as fresh in my mind like it happened yesterday and I need a song that will help push me to train, and to get through the race this fall.
Like last year, whenever I need a pick me up, or extra motivation to train for my goal, I will play my theme song. This year my theme song will be “Keep Holding On” by Avril Lavigne because of the lyrics:
When it gets cold, and it feels like the end
There’s no place to go you know I won’t give in
(Ah, Ah) No I won’t give in (Ah, Ah-Ah)
Keep holding on
‘Cause you know we’ll make it through
We’ll make it through
Just stay strong
‘Cause you know I’m here for you
I’m here for you
When I quit that marathon 10 yrs ago I was FREEZING cold and soaked to the bone, but this year I ‘m going to keep on holding on when the running gets tough, and when it gets cold. I ‘m going to stay strong. I know I ‘m going to make it through.
This year, Avril Lavigne’s beautiful song “Keep Holding On”, and the inspiring message to remember that your dreams are worth the effort will help push me towards my goal. This year, my dreams are worth the effort, and I will keep holding on to make them happen. With you guys on my side I will fight and defend, I can do this!
Believe in yourself… Keep holding on!
Question: Do you have a theme song for 2014?
